John David Grathwohl passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, surrounded by his children, wife, and brother-in-law, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service, family devotion, and community involvement.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Irvin Grathwohl, and his mother, Toni Toy.
John is survived by his stepfather, Greg DeLaurentis; his beloved wife, Patricia Brown Grathwohl; his stepson, Bryan Ramsey and wife Kristy; his sons, John Grathwohl and wife Jessica, and Justin Grathwohl; his daughter, Tamra Frank; and his four cherished grandchildren, Reinhardt, Madison, Nathan, and Madyson.
John proudly served in the United States Navy from 1977 to 1997, completing a distinguished 20-year career. His tours of duty included service aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, USS New Orleans, and his final assignment on the USS George Washington, where he held the rank of Draftsman Petty Officer 2nd Class. He also served at U.S. Atlantic Command (USACOM) and was a proud member of the U.S. Navy Beach Jumpers Association, contributing to specialized amphibious operations.
In his personal life, John found joy in his musical pursuits, playing guitar to unwind. He cherished time spent riding bicycles with his wife, walking their beloved dogs, and occasionally enjoying days at the race track. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John served as an elder and mentor, guiding others with wisdom and compassion.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on March 2, 2026, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Haywood Lane in Nashville, Tennessee. A funeral service will follow. Interment will take place on March 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on McCrory Lane in Nashville, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Elephant Sanctuary of Tennessee or the American Lung Association.
John’s memory will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
