Richard Alan Hulan was born on October 12, 1964, and departed from us on December 11, 2025. Alan was a loving, quiet country boy who loved his family deeply. He was born to Preston Hulan and Peggy Hulan, the second child of the coupling following his eldest sister, Denise. Alan loved spending time with his grandparents, Mabel and Jack Toler, a love that continued long after Daddy Jack left this mortal coil to be with the Lord.
Alan loved so many things. With a mechanic’s mind, he loved tinkering with his hands on all kinds of projects including anything with an engine, a trait that he passed on to his son, Codie. Alan loved his work as well, dedicating nearly 40 years at AkzoNobel until he was no longer able to work. He also adored his little side projects including car repairs, building additions to his home, heavy machinery like his little tractor, and riding his motorcycle.
Aside from the mechanical things and working with his hands, Alan also loved animals. Having several pets over the years, he was fond of them and often would dote on them like they were extra children he had. Alan was silly, goofy, loving, and kind. He also loved jokes, often making people laugh about “Mexican barking spiders” and asking his daughter if she wanted to join a Snipe hunt, a joke she wouldn’t get for many many years. However, he may be pleased (or perturbed) to know that Snipes are an actual bird, so it was entirely plausible to go on this hunt.
Alan also loved music, everything from Old Outlaw Country to Bluegrass to Classic Rock. He would often spend morning drives listening to some of his favorite artists. Many days were spent listening to classic rock on the way to work, something that he absolutely passed on to his son, Codie, and daughter, Chrissy, no doubt shaping their current music tastes.
Most importantly, Alan loved his family. He loved his brothers and sisters, with no concept of “step- “or “half- “anything. Blood didn’t matter to him; the connection he had with people he loved did. The same extended to his children, with each one being a source of joy and pride for him. Alan once stated that he didn’t have a stepmother, but an extra mom. He would proudly proclaim that he had 3 sisters and 2 brothers, no mention of genetics to be found. Alan loved being around his eldest siblings: Denise and Donald, and younger siblings: Michelle a.k.a. “Punkin”, Tina, and Todd.
Alan stepped hard into the father's role for all of his children. He dove headfirst into fatherhood with his eldest son, Gary, and eldest daughter, Nikki. Later, he welcomed his son, Codie, into the world and not too long after taking on the bonus dad role for Chrissy and Stephanie. Later, he welcomed many grandchildren and took on the PawPaw role happily. He would tell people often that he had 3 daughters and two sons, each with something special that he adored.
Alan also loved his wife, Marilyn, with whom he shared the last 25+ years of his life with. Truly, they were soulmates. Alan and Marilyn would joke that they had a Brady Bunch setup as far as children were concerned, but each child was loved dearly by the both of them. Alan loved Marilyn, though stating this in the past-tense would be incorrect. There is no doubt that his love for her extends well beyond the Earthly side of existence.
Richard Alan Hulan is preceded in death by his beloved grandparents: Mabel and Jack Toler, his parents: Peggy Hulan, Preston and Jackie Hulan, his niece: Lacie Waldrop, and his daughter: Stephanie Bobo, all of whom undoubtedly welcomed him at the Gates of Heaven. Alan is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn Hulan, siblings Denise (Kevin) Bennett, Donald Waldrop, Michelle “Punkin” Holt, Tina Pratt Easley, and Todd (Adrienne) Hulan, children: Gary (Janet) Duke, Nikki (Michael) Story, Codie (Megan) Hulan, and Chrissy (Nick) McNeil, and grandchildren: Gracie, Caden, Alice, Cayleigh, Addison, Emerie, Hollis, and Finley, as well as numerous additional family members and beloved friends.
Let Alan’s legacy on this Earth be the reminders to be true to yourself, hold your loved ones tight, take each day as a blessing, and the knowledge that family doesn’t mean blood but who you love and care about. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and time. Please keep in contact with the family regarding details and location.
