On Friday, October 6, 2023, the world was dimmed by the sudden passing of Sheryl Poll, a radiant spirit, at the age of 55. She leaves behind a profound legacy that spans the roles she valued most in life – as a beloved daughter, a cherished sister, a doting aunt, a devoted partner, and a treasured friend.
Sheryl was born on August 15, 1968, in New Hyde Park, NY, the precious daughter of Jerry and Suzi (Reisman) Poll. Her formative years unfolded in Great Neck on Long Island growing up with her older brother, Eric, and younger sister, Caryn. She spent idyllic summers at the local Lake Success Swim Club and embarked on memorable adventures at Camp Olympus in the picturesque Catskill mountains. Sheryl’s educational journey took her through Lakeville Elementary and Great Neck South Middle Schools. She graduated in 1986 from Great Neck South High School where she formed lifelong bonds and friends who cherished her for her quick wit, her infectious humor, and her boundless compassion.
With a passion for cinema, Sheryl earned a bachelor’s degree in 1997 from Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus in film studies. Her journey eventually led her to the vibrant city of Nashville, where she found her heart’s true home with her beloved partner, Kym. Sheryl’s career path meandered through TNN and MTV networks as a video archivist before she discovered her true calling in the field of closed captioning, an inspired choice motivated by her partner’s hearing loss.
Sheryl’s passions were diverse, each rooted in a profound and genuine love. She was an unwavering advocate for politics and an ardent supporter of animal welfare, particularly to the rescue and care of vulnerable cats and kittens. Her love for the thrill of football and the grace of ice hockey, the magic of cinema, the pleasure of savoring good food were passions she shared with infectious enthusiasm. Her heart brimmed with deep appreciation for comedies and timeless Hollywood classics and her cinematic knowledge was boundless, often conversing with her brother and sister through spirited exchanges of pertinent movie quotes.
In a digital world, Sheryl thrived, actively engaging in online interactions through texts, emails, and social media posts. She ardently discussed politics, disseminated important news, and shared humorous memes and jokes. Her online presence became a source of insight, laughter, and connection for those who knew her.
Yet, perhaps one of Sheryl’s most cherished qualities was her remarkable sense of humor and razor-sharp wit. Her astute observations and cleverly timed movie quotes turned every conversation into an unforgettable, joy-filled experience. Her laughter was a radiant light, capable of dispelling the darkest of shadows.
Sheryl leaves behind a loving partner, Kym, with whom she shared nearly three decades of unwavering devotion. Their love story, born in the early days of dial-up internet, brought joy to both their families, who found profound happiness in their union. Sheryl not only shared her heart but also dedicated herself as a primary caretaker, revealing the depth of her boundless love and selflessness.
In a poignant tribute to Sheryl’s memory, her family and partner made the courageous choice for her to become a hero in passing, donating her organs and tissues to those in need. Through this selfless act, a part of her will endure, bringing hope and healing to others. The recipients of these life saving gifts may find themselves inexplicably quoting movies or crafting humorous or wry political commentary, a lasting testament to the remarkable legacy she leaves behind.
Sheryl was preceded in death by her loving father, Jerry. She is survived by her devoted partner Kym, her mother, Suzi, her brother, Eric, her sister, Caryn, her nieces, Fern & Emily, her cousin, Bonnie, her aunt, Carol, brother-in-law, Adam, cousins and in-laws. Details regarding an online memorial service to celebrate Sheryl’s life will be shared at a later date.
The loss of Sheryl is an immeasurable void, and her absence leaves our hearts profoundly bereft. Yet, her legacy will endure in the hearts of those who were privileged to know her. As we bid goodbye to this remarkable soul, let us not mourn her departure, but rather celebrate the incredible person she was and the indelible mark she left on our lives. Her memory will forever illuminate our hearts.
Rest in eternal peace, dear, beloved Sheryl.
May her memory be for a blessing. Zecher Tzadeket Livracha.
