Fount Tillman Smothers

January 18, 1930 ~ May 12, 2021 (age 91)

Fount Tillman Smothers, 91, of Thompsons Station, TN, passed away following a short illness on May 12, 2021. He was an architect, university professor, and beloved family man. He is survived by his wife, Ida Smothers, and his son, Norman Smothers.

Fount’s favorite saying was ‘Carpe diem!’ and this is exactly how he chose to live his life.

Fount briefly attended Lipscomb University, where he met his wife, Ida, before earning his BS in Architectural Engineering at Georgia Tech, and later earning an MS in Architectural Engineering at Ohio University. After serving several years as a practicing architect he became a professor of architecture, serving on the faculties of Ohio University, Kansas University, and Louisiana State University. His published construction management research resulted in his being named a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences. Upon retiring from academia, Fount served for two years in Tennessee State Government as State Finance Director of Capital Projects.

In his spare time Fount loved spending time with his family; with the congregation of St Paul’s church in Franklin, TN; and with the restoration of his historic home, Maple Lawn, in Thompsons Station, TN. He also served as an officer in two historical societies: the Sons of the American Revolution and the Huguenot Society.

Fount was a kind and loving partner to his wife, Ida, and an amazing father to his two boys, always making time for them.

Fount will be laid to rest on May 20, 2021, adjacent to his parents, Fount and Ruth Smothers, and his sister, Katherine Douglas, in the Graceland area of Woodlawn Cemetery, in Nashville, TN.
