Maria Teresa Margherita Barone

June 7, 1936 - January 18, 2015

Maria Teresa Margherita Barone passed away at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on Sunday January 18th, 2015. She is survived by her daughter Eleanor Barone, and her granddaughter Arianna Barone.

Maria was born in Cuneo, Italy during the war to Giovanni Mattio and Clotilde Branda in Mattio. She was a late child, and the only child not only of her parents, but in her parents’ immediate families of brothers and sisters. Her aunts doted upon her and taught her a love of the piano and of Italian and French literature and art.

When Maria finished Liceo Classico, she was offered two scholarships. The first was to the Conservatory of Milan for her work at the piano, and the second to the Bocconi University of Milan for her skill in languages and literature. She had dreams of travelling the world, so she decided to go to University and obtain a PhD in languages, with English as her major. While at University she met Angelo Barone, also a student, whom she eventually married in her home town of Cuneo. Mr. Barone had dual citizenship through his mother who had been born in upstate New York, and he decided become American. He joined the Army, and although he had a higher degree from Italy, he proceeded to obtain his Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees in the United States.

Eventually, Maria and Angelo moved to the United States, and travelled to many places before settling in Centreville, Virginia. Maria taught French and Spanish, and occasionally Italian to her wonderful students at Christendom College in Front Royal for many years until she eventually retired at the age of 69 to spend time with her husband during his illness, and to play with her new granddaughter.

After Angelo Barone died January 29th, 2009, Maria spent the rest of her life with her daughter and granddaughter. They will miss their ‘nonna’ terribly, and all who knew her will miss her gentle humor and wit and love. She will be remembered later this year by friends in New York City, and in Italy by friends and family.
